My water heater isn’t cozy

September 24th, 2007

As you may know, I’ve been trying to become more green since starting this blog. I’m not an expert, but I hope my posts are helping others in some way.

So, here I go on my latest quest. Al Gore is saying that a water heater blanket can cut your home’s CO2 emmissions by as much as 4.5 percent. If we all insulate our water heaters, it would make a difference.

As you can tell from the photo above, my fat and short water heater is naked. And I was just joking that I finally don’t need anything from Lowes anymore. (I fixed up an old house a few years ago.)

The blankets cost around $20. I’m thinking that my apartments might not care to install one since they don’t have to pay the electric bill. However, it never hurts to ask.

Here’s a how-to guide from the US Dept of Energy.

I know you can go into a home improvement store and get a water heater blanket, but just make sure you are getting one that’s large enough for your heater. I hate returning things.

An added bonus of making your heater cozy is that your hot water will stay hotter between tap runs. That means you won’t waste as much water waiting for it to get hot. I would love that since my tap takes a long minute to get hot.
