School Bus Safety Week is Green Too

October 20th, 2009

This week is National School Bus Safety Week, and the American School Bus Council is working to help ensure the safety of the 26 million students who take the school bus daily. This year’s theme is “Avoid Harm, Obey the Stop Arm!

It’s very important to stop when the Stop Arm deploys. Violators place children in danger.

The School Bus Stop Arm requires drivers in all states to stop. However, many traffic violations involving the stop arm are motivating law enforcement to crack down on violators. Another thing to keep in mind is that it’s never legal to pass a school bus from behind when the red lights are flashing.

So, how’s all this green?

Each school bus takes an estimated 36 cars off the road, decreasing traffic and idling. Plus, the National Academy of Sciences and U.S. Department of Transportation say that the school bus is the safest way to transport students. Yet, according to a recent survey, less than half the parents in the US know that the school bus is the safest way for children to get to and from school.

Do you have concerns about your child riding the school bus?
