Recycling on Vacation Too

I have a new suggestion for you when filling out comment cards at hotels this vacation season:

Ask the hotel to start including recycling bins in guest rooms.

Or at least in the lobby. And that leads me to this question — What do you do with items you’d normally recycle when you’re away from home?

While on vacation, you’re probably tempted to just throw those items away. After all, you’ll have enough to contend with when you get back. Sorting through recycling you took on the plane or in the car? Hmm, doesn’t seem like much fun, does it?

The easiest solution seems to be asking hotels or B&Bs to start including recycling bins for their guests. Some hotels already do this, and you can search for them at Environmentally Friendly Hotels.

What do you do with your recycling while on vacation?

Another great website for finding “Green” hotels is iStayGreen.org. It has around 3,000 properties that have been Green Eco-Leaf Rated. It’s also a social networking site similar to Facebook – TripAdvisor – and Expedia but all wrapped up into one website for the eco-friendly traveler to hang out at. Their members write reviews on the properties they stay at based on their “Green” initiatives, so basically the public is creating an accountability system that forces the property owners to be truthful in their claims and do something about becoming more environmentally friendly.

You know, you don’t see hotels with recycling – it’s odd. I carry bags for dirty clothes, so I can use those for recycling stuff (take it home), but that’s a HUGE hassle. Hmmm, you should start emailing hotels.

When I’m traveling, I hang onto the various travel papers I take with me (confirmations of e-tickets and hotel registrations, rental car papers, etc.) and recycle or shred them when I get home (I recycle my shredded paper, too).

It would be nice to see hotels doing more recycling. One bit of happy news: we flew out and back to BWI airport and, when we got home, I noticed the airport had installed recycling stations. In fact, I think they installed them while we were away, because I don’t recall ever seeing them before.

    Jennifer, maybe I’ll do that. : )

Debbi, that’s great news about BWI. I’ve been there a few times since my sister lives near DC. I’ll look for them on my next trip. Thanks.
