Fair Trade (and Green) Metal Sculpture from Haiti

November 1st, 2010

As mentioned a few posts back, I just got into a new home. With too many bare walls to fill, I  went in search of some good art.

At Gaiam, I found this Fair Trade sculpture made by hand without the use of electricity from a clean 55 gallon oil drum in Haiti! It’s even signed by the artists. It’s called Double Tree of Life.

The sculpture has a glossy finish and is safe for outdoors too. There’s lots of detail in the Double Tree of Life. It’s not a simple, flat piece, but has dimensions and texture. At 23 inches in diameter, it’s perfect for hanging above my fireplace.

I’ve purchased from Gaiam before with no problems, but this time they sent me the wrong sculpture at first. They put a new one in the mail right away, but they sent it through the postal service, taking seven to 10 days. It was difficult to wait an additional 10 days to get the correct one, but I’m happy now that I finally have it! And my walls are less bare.

For a great Fair Trade, eco-friendly holiday gift with some character (and a story), you can’t go wrong with this item. Plus, it’s nice to support artists in Haiti who are taking the time to make something by hand.

Tip: If you’re looking for some help to cover shipping costs, check with retailmenot for a current coupon code for Gaiam.
