Sexy Freezers Stay on Top

August 17th, 2010

We may be going backwards. Or upside down. Something like that. Is it really so cool to have a freezer on bottom?

Bottom-mount freezers are becoming much more popular. Haven’t you noticed the gleaming stainless steel models with the elegant French doors opening to a refrigerator on top and not one, but sometimes two bottom-mount freezer drawers?

Even when you buy a bottom-mount refrigerator that’s Energy Star certified, you’re still using 10 to 25% more energy than if you stayed with a top-mount freezer. That’s not very attractive if you’re trying to save energy.

My reasons for wanting a bottom-mount freezer are that

One – They look sweet.
Two – My tall husband has to duck to see into the refrigerator.

Those reasons just aren’t good enough.

In case you’re wondering, side-by-side models also use more energy than top-mounts. Find out more about what to look for when buying an earth-friendly refrigerator at Energy Star.

By the way — I’m buying a house! I couldn’t wrestle the refrigerator away from the current homeowner (she loves her Amana). And hmm, don’t think my apartments would appreciate me taking the GE off their hands.

Have you fridge shopped lately?

Isn’t it so much fun shopping for your new home! We are doing the same right now.

Shaiha, yes, it is fun. I have to say though, I’m not having any luck finding refrigerators with freezers on top that fit my needs very well. They’re all smaller with no filtered water.
