Skip the produce bags

The first time I brought my groceries home in my reusable shopping bags, I got out the digital camera. Then I decided I could not post that photo. Inside my reusable bags, I had plastic bags with produce in them. Why?

I’ll agree that cashiers have a hard enough time without you skipping the produce bags on things like string beans. However, I found myself putting one lemon in a bag. Two tomatoes. Two bananas. It’s just a bad habit. There’s no reason for it.

During my last trip, I resisted the produce baggage. Now my lemon is nestled safely inside my fridge. No need for plastic wrap!

Cool blog 🙂 I enjoy reading new green journeys. I love the bags you picked out they look great. I agree about the green bean (or mushroom) dilemma — something I think about often. I don’t consider it as bad if you always use the same bag. I’d take a container but the extra weight is a price problem. Something I’ve been considering are those lightweight strawberry baskets; not eco-friendly in themselves but weightless and thrift stores usually have some. I think they’d hold stuff like green beans nicely.

Thanks Jennifer. Having this blog has really helped me stick to my decision to be more green. Not only that, but it’s made my spouse get into the green groove too! Just a few days ago, he reminded me to make PDFs instead of printing whenever possible.

This blog is awesome. I’m hoping it’ll motivate me to be more green, I really want to, but I’m like those people who grab the plastic bags at the super market without thinking, I’ve grown up not bothering about things like that…it’s time for a change I say!

Arggh, I hate those plastic bags! I think we should soon require all disposable containers to be 100% biodegradable. Annie Chun’s is a brand of Asian foods (I mostly get to-go soups) and their containers are made from cornstarch!

Plastic — bah — I have been waging war on the filthy stuff for over a year now and I don’t mean just refusing carrier bags. One use plastic products are a dirty, expensive, possibly carcinogenic, profligate use of the worlds resources resulting in an overwhelming tide of permanent, non biodegradable debris. I hate them…so last year decided I would boycott it all – plastic packaging, bags, bottles and stupid free coat hangers that snap before you get home. Each month I veto a plastic/plastic packed product and substitute a better packaged, more sustainable, biodegradable sometimes, as needs must, home made options.
