The Green Hour Giveaway

Make your Earth Day especially green by learning more about why it’s good for kids to spend time outside instead of growing up mostly indoors.

The Green Hour by Todd Christopher encourages families to spend one “green hour” outdoors each day.

One big green reason for encouraging kids to spend time outdoors is that they’ll naturally grow to respect nature. As Todd Christopher reminds us, children must first discover the earth before they go about trying to save it.

The Green Hour not only sets forth all the reasons we need to rehab the dwindling outdoors time spent by today’s busy children, it also serves as a field guide for enjoying nature. The author covers all the basics — safety, bug safari, bird watching, dirt exploration, attracting butterflies, hiking, shore fun, snow play, star gazing and more.

Two winners will receive a copy of The Green Hour!

To enter:

  • Leave a comment on this post sharing a fond memory of your time spent outdoors as a child.
  • Enter by 11 pm Friday, April 23, 2010.
  • The winners will have three days to respond to my request for a mailing address. US mailing addresses only.

(Disclosure: I received a complimentary review copy of The Green Hour. Contest copies are provided by the publisher.)

UPDATE 4/26: Congrats to the winners: Melissa B and Amber G!

I used to love to make mud pies and pretend I was cooking and baking. I think I spent alot of time in the sandbox.

We lived on a lake so we spent a lot of time swimming, boating, and snowmobiling.

My favorite memory was swimming in the lake at the cabin as a kid. I still enjoy it today and it always brings back memories

We try to spend time outside with our children everyday. Our three boys really love to play in the snow. Just a couple of months ago we took them sledding. It is always fun to see how they react to the rush of going down a hill at what seems like 100 miles per hour.

I loved being outside as a kid, playing in the corn field behind our house. It was around 50 acres, so we had plenty of room to hit golf balls, play chase and get lost in a maze of fresh corn stalks. Many small cuts later, it was very worth it.

When I was a child, my family moved around a lot BUT there were a few years we spent in a small Wisconsin city, at the edge of which were “The Woods” (at least that’s what we kids called it!). Everyone loved to go there because it was dark and mysterious and woodsy! I loved it!
